Turn Your Scouting Report Into Powerful Competitive Intelligence

When you or a member of your staff scouts a team, do you use a standardized Scouting Report form? If not, you're missing out on key information that can help your team gain a competitive advantage. While you might not be able to scout every team you're going to play, you should consider advanced scouting for important games that you really want/need to win.

Here's an example of how advanced scouting gave me a competitive advantage in a big game in my coaching past. One of my assistants found that a very good pitcher that we would be facing only looked once at a runner on second and noted it in his report. So, when we faced this pitcher our guys took off for 3B as soon as he would turn to throw to home. It became a track meet for us. Our base runners were standing up going into 3B, their jumps were so huge. The catcher never had a chance. Needless to say, we won the game. But, I'm convinced that if we didn't note this habit in our report it might have never been brought up in our pre-game strategy session.

Obviously, you have to convey the information you collect in your scouting report to your staff and players. Implemented properly, you can gain a tremendous advantage over opposing teams.
